Healthy eating in Torremolinos: organic, gluten-free and vegan products

In the shop you will find real pantry staples: pulses, whole grains, seeds and nuts, gluten-free bread and pasta, plant-based drinks and yoghurts, organic preserved foods and oils, loose herbal teas and alternatives to traditional sweeteners. Nothing spectacular, everything useful every day.

The difference is who has chosen each product. Here, we read labels every day, talk to distributors and reject much of what we are offered. If you come from Benalmádena or Málaga looking for organic food, you take away more than a product: you benefit from our selection process and an explanation of why we chose that one rather than the one beside it.

What you will find in the shop

Six sections covering a household's full weekly shop, with or without dietary restrictions.

  • Organic foods

Preserved foods, oils, pasta, nut butters, eggs, plant-based drinks and seasonal pantry staples with European organic certification. We look at the origin and the ingredients list: an organic product with twenty ingredients is still ultra-processed, and we will tell you that too.

  • Gluten-free

Bread, flour, pasta, biscuits, coatings and bread mixes suitable for both coeliac disease and gluten sensitivity. We distinguish between products bearing the crossed-grain symbol and those simply labelled “gluten-free” on the packaging, because that difference matters to someone with coeliac disease.

  • Vegan and plant-based

Plant-based drinks with no added sugars, soya, coconut or almond yoghurts, tofu, tempeh, seitan, pea or rice proteins and spreads with no animal-derived ingredients. We help you compare the actual protein content per serving, which is usually where questions arise.

  • Herbal teas and plants

Loose-leaf and bagged herbal teas, individual herbs and traditional herbal blends. This is where our experience shows: forty years weighing out chamomile, lime blossom, pennyroyal, rooibos and lemon verbena teach you what keeps well, how to prepare each plant and what proportions make a pleasant drink.

  • Sweeteners and alternatives

Panela, honey, syrups, coconut sugar, erythritol, xylitol and stevia in various forms. Each behaves differently in cooking and on the palate, so the practical approach is to discuss what you want it for: your morning coffee needs something different from a sponge cake.

  • Pantry essentials

Pulses, whole grains, rice, quinoa, oats, seeds and nuts, loose or packaged. This is the least eye-catching part of the shop and the most used: the foundation of healthy eating in Torremolinos is built on these foods, not on trendy products.

How to read a label

Four checks you can make in any supermarket aisle in under a minute. They are the same ones we carry out before deciding whether to stock a product.

  1. 1

The order of ingredients tells you almost everything

Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest quantity. If the first or second is sugar, refined oil or refined flour, you already know what the product is made of, however much the front of the packaging talks about fibre or whole grains. It is the quickest and most useful check.

  2. 2

    Sugars hide under other names

Glucose syrup, dextrose, maltodextrin, corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, molasses, invert sugar or any word ending in -ose are sugars. Splitting them across several names means none appears first on the list, even if together they are the main ingredient.

  1. 3

“No added sugars” is not the same as “sugar-free”

A product may have no added sugar yet contain plenty of sugar naturally present in the food, as with juices or date bars. Look at the nutrition table, at the line “of which sugars”, and always compare per 100 grams, not per serving, which is where the figures get dressed up.

  2. 4

Official organic labels versus marketing claims

The only label that guarantees organic production in the European Union is the green leaf made of stars, accompanied by the control body's code. Words such as “natural”, “artisan”, “garden-grown” or “bio-inspired” on packaging are not regulated in the same way and do not certify anything on their own.
